Overview
The National Service Scheme (NSS) was launched on 24th September 1969 by the then Union Education Minister Dr. V. K. R. V. Rao, initially at the university level across all states of India. In 1985, the programme was extended to the +2 (Higher Secondary) level.
At present, NSS has a strength of over 1.3 million volunteers nationwide. The significant role played by NSS in shaping responsible citizens has been acknowledged and appreciated in the New Education Policy (NEP).
The NSS aims to develop in students a spirit of service, empathy, social responsibility, leadership, and teamwork. It helps students understand and respect different perspectives and encourages compassion towards all living beings.
The motto of NSS, “NOT ME BUT YOU,” reflects its core philosophy of selfless service. The NSS symbol, inspired by the giant chariot wheel of the Konark Sun Temple, represents movement, dynamism, and the cycle of life.
